The Somali Library Association (SLA) is the first-of-its-kind professional organization established in 2021 and headquartered in Mogadishu. Founded with the critical mission of revitalizing and strengthening Somalia’s library and information services sector,
VISION
To be the leading representative body for librarians and information professionals in Somalia, promoting the development of the library and information sector to support education, research, and community empowerment.
MISSION
The Somali Library Association is dedicated to advancing the library and information sector in Somalia through advocacy, professional development, infrastructure modernisation, information literacy promotion, and collaboration with Somali librarians globally.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
1. Organizational Development Establish a robust governance structure and operating procedures for the SLA Grow the membership base, including actively engaging Somali librarians in the diaspora Secure sustainable funding sources to support the association's activities.
2. Capacity Building Assess the training and professional development needs of Somali libraries, and information services available Design and deliver tailored training programs on topics such as library management, information technology, and community engagement Facilitate peer-to-peer learning and knowledge sharing opportunities among librarians, including virtual mentorship and exchange programs with diaspora librarians.
3. Library Infrastructure and Services Conduct a comprehensive survey of the current state of libraries, including the National Library of Somalia, across the country Advocate for increased government and donor funding to rehabilitate and equip libraries Develop guidelines and standards for the operation of public, academic, and specialized libraries Promote the integration of digital technologies to enhance library services and access to information.
5. Community Engagement and Diaspora Mobilization • Establish programs and initiatives to promote reading, literacy, and lifelong learning • Strengthen the role of libraries as community hubs, providing access to information, resources, and cultural activities • Develop outreach strategies to engage underserved populations, including displaced communities and marginalized groups • Identify and connect with Somali librarians in the diaspora, encouraging their involvement in the association's activities and initiatives • Facilitate knowledge and skills transfer from diaspora librarians to their counterparts within Somalia through virtual training, mentorship, and professional exchange programs • Explore opportunities to support the voluntary return and reintegration of diaspora librarians who wish to contribute their expertise back in Somali.

Absence of the role of National library and its legislation and framework. Challenges in determining appropriate board representation.Reluctance from Association of Somali universities to engage with the association. Challenges in attracting sponsorships for program activities. Insufficient number of qualified librarians to represent. Weak advocacy and recognition of the library profession. Limited engagement with international development agencies.
OPPORTUNITIES
Growing demand for library services in post-conflict reconstruction. Potential for partnerships and collaborations with local and international organizations. Increasing access to digital technologies and the internet. Availability of consultancy services to provide strategic guidance. Capitalizing on the Open Science movement.
THREATS
Political and economic instability disrupting library operations. Limited government support and prioritization of library services. Negative perceptions and low social status of the library profession. Disruptive impact of technological advancements on traditional library operations. Challenges in aligning with the Open Science movement due to absence of national policy.
