The Somali Library Association (SLA) is the first-of-its-kind professional organization established in 2021 and headquartered in Mogadishu. Prior to the devastating civil war beginning in 1990, libraries were an integral part of Somalia's rich educational and cultural landscape, but the protracted conflict left many facilities destroyed or underutilized and disorganized collections, lacking basic management skills and systems for modern information practices.
