Library Management and Open Science Workshop: Highlights and Insights

The Somali Library Association (SLA) was invited at the “Library Management and Open Science Workshop” at the Conference Hall of Jowhara Hotel in Mogadishu organized by Somali Research and Education Network (SomaliREN), Somalia. Members of SomaliREN, local librarians, educators, and community leaders attended the event.

The workshop was held on February 14–16, 2023 and aimed to provide participants with an overview of library management best practices and open science data, discuss challenges and opportunities facing Somali libraries, and explore the potential benefits of a Somali Librarians and Knowledge Managers Society. The three-day event covered several critical topics related to Somali libraries, research centers, educators, and community leaders, including the best practices of library management, the challenges faced by libraries in Somalia, and other valuable topics.

On the first day of the workshop, attendees focused on understanding the best practices of library management. The second day focused on discussing open science data, its importance in the research and education sector, and the challenges of accessing open science data in Somalia. Finally, the third day centered on identifying the need for a society of librarians and knowledge managers dedicated to Somali libraries.

During the event, SLA President, Mr. Mohamud Mohamed Siyad, delivered a passionate presentation on the essential role libraries play in community development, particularly in Somalia. Mr. Siyad emphasized the need for libraries to provide access to information and educational resources, promote literacy, and create safe spaces for community members to gather and learn.

The event also featured a panel discussion, giving attendees the opportunity to ask questions and share their experiences in using libraries for community development. One of the key takeaways from the discussion was the need for increased support for libraries in Somalia, particularly in terms of funding, resources, and infrastructure.

In conclusion, the “Library Management and Open Science Workshop” was a great success in highlighting the vital role libraries play in community development in Somalia. The SLA remains committed to advocating for libraries and promoting their importance in building stronger and more resilient communities.
